I’m a poet, baby. I’m not a Doctor, a lawyer; I don’t sell used cars, houses, or vacuum cleaners, door to door. I’m a poet. I live by the word; I’ll die by the word. You have my word on it.

I am a poet and a memoirist. I post many poems, and many of my journal entries to these pages.

I write The Daily K, a stream of conscious narrative about my life, and the things that interest me here at The Bold Spicy News, at Open Salon.com, and on my Faceboook page.

I like Checker’s burgers better than I like McDonald’s burgers, though I like McD’s french fries better. I try not to eat fast food because it is bad for me, and it is bad for the cows, and the planet. I am diabetic. I have to watch what I eat, or food can kill me. I indulge in fast food very rarely.

“A diabetic meal is a balanced healthy diet with appropriate mixture of carbohydrates, proteins and fats that provide essential nutrients as well as to create an even release of glucose into the blood of a diabetes patient.”

I tend to gravitate towards the carbs; pasta and rice call out to me. Something inside me wants to ignore salads, and fruit. I can’t get to heaven on just a diet of coffee. Bless me Lord for I have sinned; please guide me to a low blood sugar level.

I prick my finger several times a day with a small pin. I drop the blood, that then comes out of my finger, onto a strip that I have inserted into a meter that gives me a blood sugar level. The reading guides me as to how well I am doing sugar level wise. If the reading is consistently high, I have to call my endocrinologist(diabetes doctor). I am on meds for the diabetes, and if I can not control my sugar level with diet, exercise, and the meds that I am on, I won’t have to take on more meds.

For decades, I drank more than two liters a day of coca cola. My diet was very high in sugar for most of my life. I had no idea that certain things were better to eat for me than others; I just ate, and what I ate, and my lack of exercise finally lead me to being a diabetic.

My diabetes was first diagnosed by a girlfriend of mine, who said that the frequent trips that I made to the bathroom over a night’ sleep were indicative that I was diabetic. I thought she was crazy, and she was, in certain ways, but she was correct about me being a diabetic, and I thank her for this, wherever she is.

Being a diabetic is challening in many ways. Ultimately if I don’t step up to the challengers, I will lose toes, feet, legs, and ultimately my life. Being diabetic has lead me to a healthier way of life. Because I am diabetic, I eat better, and exercise more regularly than I would if I was not diabetic.

I thank God for making me who I am, and I look forward to a long life.

I was talking to a good friend, the other day, via the internet, and she said that she didn’t know what she wanted out of life. I think that this is a common occurrence among us humans. Henry David Thoreau is often quoted for saying, “The mass of man lead lives of quiet desperation.” I think that we should add that, “The mass of women lead lives of quiet desperation, also.”

Man, or woman, you don’t have to lead a life of quiet desperation. Your existence doesn’t have to be meaningless. I think that one of the really neat things about life is that you can pick your own purpose for being here. Decide what you want to be, and be it. Have a dream, dream it, and work towards it.

No one but you is responsible for your life, but you. If you are leading a mamby pamby existence, floundering in nothingness, it is your own fault, and you are the one who can alter the situation.

Pick something to be, and be it. You can change what you picked later if it doesn’t work out for you!! Life can be full of many goals, and dreams. Dreams and goals are important to have.

A life has more meaning, if it has meaning.

K Pics Above: Where you go in life is a series of choices, whether you realize that you are making them or not. Middle: Mikel K, and millions of others, prick their finger, and check their blood, in this manner on a daily basis, as diabetics trying to live healthy lives. Right: This is what Mikel K almost looked like, before he learned about proper diet, and exercise .

Glycemic control:
Before a meal) 70–130
After a meal <180

“Keep in mind that blood glucose results often trigger strong feelings. Blood glucose numbers can leave you upset, confused, frustrated, angry, or down. It’s easy to use the numbers to judge yourself. Remind yourself that your blood glucose level is a way to track how well your diabetes care plan is working. It is not a judgment of you as a person. The results may show you need a change in your diabetes plan.”

K Poems
Inertia Not

Into the water you must go
if you want to get wet.
Into the the air you must go
if you want to fly.
On the sidewalk you must go
if you want to get about
the neighborhood.
Take off the top
if you want to eat the mayonnaise
or peanut butter.
You can’t stand still
if you want to be going forward.

I didn’t realize that she was crzzy, too

I loved her when she was
buying the roses,
and everything else,
at the height of my insanity
we held hands.
