American Girl
By Tom Petty

Well, she was an American girl
Raised on promises
She couldn’t help thinkin’
That there was a little more to life somewhere else

After all it was a great big world
With lots of places to run to
And if she had to die tryin’
She had one little promise she was gonna keep

O yeah, all right
Take it easy, baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl]

Well, it was kind of cold that night
She stood alone on her balcony
Yeah, she could hear the cars roll by
Out on 441 like waves crashin’ on the beach

And for one desperate moment
There he crept back in her memory
God it’s so painful when something that’s so close
Is still so far out of reach

O yeah, all right
Take it easy, baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl

Were you raised on promises? Have those promises come true, and if not, who is to blame:
you, the government, evil money grubbing corporations, or as David Byrne of The Talking Heads once sang of, “The foreigners in growing numbers?”

Is there a conspiracy by an Illuminati hidden government to get rid of the middle class? Are you having trouble paying your rent, or mortgage; have you already lost your place to live? Has greed ruined us??

Are we really ruined at all, if we have the right attitude?

Promises were, maybe, made to be broken, and were we really promised anything anyway, and if we were who did the promising, and where are they now?

I’ve been trying to “make a living as a writer” by living on a paltry unemployment check, food stamps, and by begging readers to put money in The Mikel K tip jar. The more “free” time that I have, the more time that I have away from the man’s time clock, the more that I can be a writer, is my thinking; and the purer the process is, without clogging my brain with thoughts of the man’s world, which is inevitable when you work for the man.

I’m not lazy; I just understand the game. Either you are one thing, or you are another. Either you are a Poet, or you are something else. I’ve become something else. I’ve sold out. The unemployment is running out, they cut the food stamps back to an unlivable level, when I started getting the paltry unemployment check. I’m on the phone every week day, now, looking for hotels in New Jersey with an indoor pool who will let me rent part of their pools for my swimming lesson class budiness.

Stay tuned as K takes you into the wonderful world of a poet making trying to make cold call telephone sales: the fine art of how to turn air into a buck. It’s not happening anywhere else, but here on the pages of The Bold and Spicy News, OpenSalon.com, and my Facebook page.

B.K.S Iyengar is considered the world’s greatest living yoga master. He refined and perfected the technique of doing yoga poses that is most widely taught in the United States.

Iyengar began life as a frail and sickly child — but now, at the ripe age of 87, the yoga master can still stand on his head and hold a conversation at the same time.
