Suzy McGrane was a local photographer who was diagnosed with breast cancer in her early twenties and ultimately lost her battle when the disease returned years later. What started as Save Our Suzy is now known as Share Our Suzy. The goal of SOS is to bridge the financial gap and allow breast cancer patients to focus solely on recovery and not the financial stress brought on during this very difficult battle. Funds raised cover the critical areas that insurance companies do not by providing assistance to those with daily needs such as wigs, prosthetics, childcare, gas cards, utility bill assistance, medication assistance and more. Share Our Suzy’s mission is to raise money and resources to assist and support breast cancer patients in South Carolina from diagnosis to remission.

What is self-discipline? Self-discipline has been defined as the ability to make yourself do what you know you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like or not! A disciplined person knows what has to be done and does it. They don’t put it off until latter or allow themselves to be easily taken off track. And, most importantly they prioritize and focus on being self-disciplined with activities that move them toward their goals. There’s a big difference between having self-discipline with tasks that don’t move you toward your goals and doing very well what need not be done at all. It’s usually the more challenging activities and tasks that will help you reach your goals than those of less importance. This concept is easily confused so be careful which activities you exercise your self-discipline in.

When teaching children self-discipline it is important to have fun and keep in mind that the idea is to establish routines that are followed for the entire week without deviation or distraction. We want our children to pick up after themselves, to clean their rooms without being told, to study and do their homework on their own, and to be responsible for their extra curricular programs as well. We demand a whole lot from them!

First explain to them that there are two kinds of discipline; Parent discipline- We constantly tell them what they need to do! And Self-discipline- They take care of certain things without reminders from us! Sometime just understanding that can point them in the right direction! Next list out all of their responsibilities that have to do with, school, home, extracurricular, and leisure time. Have a discussion about all their responsibilities in those areas. Then, with their input, teach them how to prioritize. In other words make sure they know that homework and studying are more important than chores. Remember the self-disciplined person does the more important goal-oriented activity first.

When your child understands what’s important by the goals you and him have set it will be easy to establish a comfortable routine for everyone to follow. Your routine should include all the activities on your list. The more regimented you child becomes and the more you and him plan time for every responsibility in order of importance the more discipline he will have. Just remember to stick to a fun routine so it becomes habit and your child wants to be self-disciplined.

ATLANTA, GA – (April 17, 2012). LifeLine Animal Project, a non-profit animal rescue and advocacy organization, will throw its biggest party of the year in downtown Atlanta on Thursday, May 17th from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. Dogs are welcome guests and LifeLine encourages party goers to “dare to wear black!”, tying into the Lint Roller theme.

It’s a light-hearted party approach to raising awareness and support for the many serious issues that LifeLine tackles daily. Since 2002 LifeLine has worked tirelessly to end the euthanasia of healthy and treatable dogs and cats in area shelters, promote adoption and rescue and rehabilitate homeless pets who have nowhere else to turn.

Do you suddenly have the urge to organize the closets, start a new project, or begin a cleanse? If yes, you are in alignment with the energy of Spring. It’s time to clean out your closets and detox your liver, too!

Oftentimes, at this time of year, the body naturally begins cleansing itself from excess oils, fats, salt, carbohydrates, and animal proteins by releasing a flu or cold. Some folks may also suffer mysterious bodily aches and pains, and don’t understand why. Don’t worry… you are not falling apart, this is the liver’s way of releasing toxins and cleaning house.

We can aid our liver through this natural cleansing process by eating lightly prepared meals, less food overall, eliminating animal products for a specific period of time, and/or fasting from food entirely. The springtime, I believe, is the best time of year to go “vegan” or “vegetarian” for a short period of time.

Traditionally, many cultures and religions around the world have used some type of cleansing or fasting ritual, especially in the Spring and Fall months. In the springtime, fasting can help relieve the pent-up stagnation of winter (physically, emotionally and spiritually).

Some examples include Orthodox Greeks that fast for up to seven weeks during the spring. They abstain from eating foods from animals with red blood (meats, poultry, game) and products from animals with red blood (milk, cheese, eggs, etc.), and fish and seafood. Wine and olive oil are also restricted. Fasting is serious business. Imagine…. seven weeks without olive oil? Oh my!

The Catholics fast for 40 days prior to Easter. This fast includes eating lighter meals and abstaining from meat on Fridays. Many other religions and cultures around the world have some type of fasting regimen during the spring months, too.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the spring correlates with the Liver and Gallbladder meridians. Reducing animal fats and proteins, as well as fasting, supports the healing and renewal of this complementary organ system. It seems religions around the world and traditional healing therapies have this commonality; spring cleaning the body is essential for physical and spiritual healing.

Every Spring, I too, begin a fasting ritual. I eat lighter foods (salads, sprouts, spring soups, fish) and reduce heavy animal proteins and fats for a few weeks. I follow that up with three days of The Master Cleanser (lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper, water). While doing the Master Cleanser, I abstain from food entirely and only drink the liquid for a short period of time (three days). Some folks fast for longer, but I feel that my body and soul are pretty clear already and 72 hours works perfectly for my system.

This year, instead of The Master Cleanser, I’m doing a specific Liver Detox/Cleanse from Linda Page’s Healthy Healing. Here is a partial list of what it entails:

Drink 8 glasses of water per day. Add ¼ tsp. vitamin C crystals to each glass of water (it’s a natural heavy metal toxin chelator).

Have a dark leafy vegetable salad every day

One cup of miso soup with sea vegetables the night before you begin the cleanse

Make a liver tonic: 4 oz hawthorn berries, 2 oz red sage (salvia), 1 oz of cardamom seeds. Steep 24 hours in 2 qts. water. Add honey. Take 2 cups daily.

For the next 3 days…

On rising: take 1 lemon squeezed in water; or 2 tbsp. cider vinegar in water with 1 tsp. honey.

Breakfast: take a potassium broth, or carrot-beet-cucumber juice. Add 1 tsp. spirulina to any drink.

Mid-morning: take a green veggie drink; or a green superfood powder in water or vegetable juice.

Lunch: have a glass of fresh carrot juice, or organic apple juice, or a cup of liver tonic.

Mid-afternoon: mint or green tea, or Crystal Star Liver Cleansing Tea

Dinner: have another carrot juice or a mixed vegetable juice, or hot vegetable broth

Before bed: a pineapple/papaya juice with 1 tsp. Royal Jelly

I’ve experimented with various cleanses in Linda’s book before (Bladder/Kidney Cleanse, Lung & Respiratory Detox) and have had good results with myself, and with clients. This is the first time I’ll be doing her Liver Detox in the Spring. I’m sure it’ll be a great way to start the season, and spring into spring renewed, ready, and receptive to spiritual guidance for the coming year.

Let me know if you decide to try it for yourself and what your results are.

Happy Spring!

Wishing you health,

I am a Sucker for “As Seen On TV” items…

So I recently purchased the “NEAT DESK Organizer”. I bought the bigger of the two organizers NEAT offers. I felt like it was a ‘bigger bang for the buck’! Well let me say I love it!

Now I am looking for things to scan. Not only can you scan documents, receipts, and business cards, but the NEAT DESK is smart. It’s 90% accurate in the way it categorizes files. If it scans incorrectly or to the wrong document type you can manually edit. The NEAT DESK also allows you to file the documents for your year end taxes. This scanner allows you to scan anything and turn it into a PDF file.

This NEAT DESK will scan color or black and white as well as ‘double-sided’ scanning with just one quick pass. The software that is provided with the unit is very easy to use.

A new novel by an award-winning writer and editor focuses attention on one of the most horrific acts of racism in U.S. history and its repercussions “unto the third and fourth generation.”

Brambleman tells the story of down-and-out Atlanta writer Charlie Sherman, who is convinced by a mysterious stranger to finish a dead professor’s book about a crime that’s gone unpunished for decades. What Charlie works on is an unwieldy manuscript about the mob-driven expulsion of more than 1,000 blacks from Forsyth County, Georgia in 1912. However, Charlie also uncovers a terrible secret involving a Forsyth County land grab. Due to its proximity to Atlanta, the stolen farm is now worth $20 million—and a sale is pending. When he finds the land’s rightful owner, Charlie becomes convinced he’s been chosen by a Higher Power to mete out justice and wreak vengeance on those who profit from evil. That’s when things go horribly wrong.

Author Jonathan Grant says the story will probably be controversial. “Many people don’t want to be reminded about Forsyth County’s past—especially because, to many people, that past has become the county’s defining characteristic—what made it what it is today.”

“The way I tell the story will ruffle even more feathers,” Grant admits.“Brambleman isn’t a dry, documentary treatment of historical events. It’s definitely not preachy. It’s wildly funny, with a heavy supernatural twist and a protagonist who often resorts to very non-heroic tactics and, along the way, doubts his sanity, motives, and who he’s actually working for.”

The novel is an outgrowth of Grant’s work on his late father Donald L. Grant’s magnum opus, The Way It Was in the South: The Black Experience in Georgia (University of Georgia Press), named Georgia’s “Book of the Year.” when it was published. “The last narrative my father wrote was on Hosea Williams’s two Forsyth County marches in 1987,” Grant says. “While I worked on the book, I became painfully aware that Forsyth Countynever received its proper due from historians. I wanted to give it the attention it deserved. Two decades later, Brambleman is here.”

The former journalist and state government spokesman lives inAtlanta with his wife and two children. He is the author of Chain Gang Elementary and co-author/editor of The Way It Was in the South: The Black Experience in Georgia.

by Larry Blumen

On March 22, those clever bird brains at Rovio released a new version of Angry Birds that marks a departure (literally!) from their previous earthbound versions. Everything up to now in this physics-based game could have been played by Galileo—when you flung a bird, it traced a parabolic arc through the sky before coming down on the hapless pigs. Now the pigs are in space, hiding on asteroids and other planetary bodies, and you have to know something about orbital mechanics to play the game—it’s rocket science.

But Angry Birds fans should not worry. The scientists at Rovio have made the first level of games absurdly easy to suck you in before upping the difficulty to a level that will leave you stranded in the asteroid belt without a retro rocket. If, like me, you had reached a point where you could play this game in your sleep blindfolded, you’ll have to wake up and start thinking again—it’s a new frontier!

Larry Blumen is an innovative author with a dryer-than-dry sense of humor. His debut book VD Man takes place in 1965, Miami, Florida, a city that has more cases of infectious syphilis than any city in America—a fact the Chamber of Commerce and the Miami Health Department conspire to cover up. Into this sticky wicket stumbles Allen Kravass, who gives up a cushy job in his father’s bank to pursue a career in syphilis eradication with the federal government. Kravass aspires to be a VD man—a sleuth for syphilis.
