Originally we thought it was time to go to the store and purchase $20 worth of harsh chemicals for a clogged tub.

While navigating which arsenic scent would be better, lilac or summer breeze (no joke: they are scented now), a cardboard stand in the aisle caught our attention.

This funny little barb cost less than $3 at the Home Depot.

Disclosure: We would never advocate for not calling a local professional, nor have we asked one if this tool is safe to use on the drains and pipes in your home.

Our original intention was to have BS Test this little stick and to see if the BrassCraft claim that it would unclog hair and muck from a drain was even possible.

After about 30 seconds of shimmy and poke this 24 inch ‘dip-stick’ only showed its round tabbed end with my white knuckle clutched.

I ripped the ZIP-IT with lawnmower force and a splattering mess of hair and debris flew up and suctioned to the ceiling and all four walls.

Despite the mess, mostly caused by my exuberance, the drain cleared and the tub emptied with the rush of newness not known to this tube for many years. Other than the nicks to my knuckles from the sharp little prickers and the uncomfortable tabbed top BS TESTS gives this simple but brilliant barbed poker 4 Bulls!

Please remember to always call a local plumber for all of your serious plumbing needs the first time and if you need a real opinion about this product.

This June marks the second annual Georgia Music Awards in which Georgia’s finest musicians come together to honor and recognize accomplishments of Georgia artists across several genres. Over 200 nominees in Rock, Hip Hop, Alternative, Latin, Country, and R&B will be recognized through the awards ceremony. The event has a very clear objective, which is to encourage the development of the music industry in Georgia while encouraging growth in music, both present and future. While the GA Music Awards will focus on the most prominent and hottest musicians and artists in Georgia, artists outside of Georgia will be honored as well.

All awards through this event are chosen by you, the fans. First, nominations are taken on the GA Music Awards website.
The "big deal" with Snellville's new Commuity Garden is "community". There is perhaps no other enterprise that captures the essence of community and transforms it into action.

The “big deal” with Snellville’s new Commuity Garden is “community”. There is perhaps no other enterprise that captures the essence of community and transforms it into action. Community gardens don’t just happen– they require planning, perserverance and ultimately sweat and occassionally a little bit of the blood, which is invariably spilled in the performance of physical labor.

The transformation of an open field in Briscoe Park into The Community Garden@Snellville began with a “what if” idea that turned into a charette that invited community input. It was at that point when the “community” aspect of the garden crystallized. The range of people providing input extended from complete novices to home gardeners to certified master gardeners to professional architects and designers. There were even a few City Council members, some with “green thumbs”, some with “black thumbs” involved, along with members of local civic groups and business owners. Many of these same people participated in “work parties” organized to prepare the site for the first garden plots and ultimately, the eagerly anticipated opening day.

That day was April 7, 2013 when Kurt and Gretchen Schulz cut the ribbon to officially open The Community Garden@ Snellville. Approximately 100 people attended the opening, toured the garden, watched demonstrations and discussed future plans. Council members Bobby Howard, Diane Krause, Dave Emanuel and Tom Witts, all of whom were deeply involved with the project were on hand, as were Snellville’s Parks and Rec director Lisa Platt, Police Chief Roy Whitehead, Director of Economic Development Eric Van Otteran, and Suwanee mayor Jimmy Burnette. They were joined by Garden Committee members Barbara Bender, Ronnie Bentley, Gloria Berry, Linda Brock, Nancy Brune, Susan Chappelear, Vint Cox, Jon Davis, Kathy Emanuel, Claudette Forbes, Jay Krause, Ileen Meggison, Olivia Mickalonis, Sid Parrott, Marcy Pharris, Steve Rasmussen, Martha Whitman, Franklin Willis, Chuck Wood and co-chairs Kurt and Gretchen Schulz.

Now that the Garden is open, activities will kick into high gear with the addition of a greenhouse, pavilion and more raised beds (all of the currently available beds have been rented). And as the Garden grows and expands, it will become a focal point that will bring national attention and admiration to Snellville, where everybody is proud to be somebody, working together in a Garden that the community built.

The latest activity involves a garnishment against her mayor’s wages, which are paid by the City of Snellville.Personal finances are just that—personal. Which has prompted questions about the relevance of personal debt to the city and its citizens. The most common question is, “Does it really matter?” Russell’s report addresses that question quite well; the over-riding concern is that an apparent pattern of personal financial irresponsibility could easily become a pattern of irresponsible city spending, and that has a direct—and negative—impact on taxpayers.

A few recent examples of questionable proposed and actual expenditures include:

*A last minute, “slide it in under the rug” proposal to add $50,000 to the budget to pay for four “Welcome to Snellville” signs

*A strong suggestion that the City spend almost $100,000 to make repairs on private property

*Payment (without Council knowledge) of over $30,000 in attorney fees that were identified as excessive and unjustified

*Irresponsible budgeting that would have added $16,000 in expenses that had already been paid in an insurance settlement

Fortunately, responsible fiscal decision-making prevailed, so Snellville’s current financial situation is excellent. Prudent budgeting, tight control of expenditures, and the Service Delivery Strategy (SDS) settlement with Gwinnett County has enabled the City to build an impressive cash reserve. A portion of that will be returned to taxpayers in the form of continued low property taxes, some will be used for physical improvements within the city and the balance will be kept on hand for emergency situations.

Had members of the City Council not rejected previous budgets, which contained what can best be described as irresponsible expenditures, Snellville’s financial condition would have been far different. It might have been similar to that of Woodstock, GA, where the consequences of excessive municipal spending in the past are apparent in a recent city audit, as reported in Woodstock Patch.

Some of the city’s financial highlights include (by June 30, 2012):

The unassigned fund balance for the general fund was $1.24 million. The city’s general fund had a deficit of $601,960, which Whitaker proclaimed as a “serious situation.” That’s an improvement from the $827,478 in 2011 due to positive cash flow.
The total 2012 actual revenues for the general fund were $15.6 million while expenditures were $15.4 million.
The city’s long-term debt stands at $42 million, which represents $17 million in government activity related debt and $24 million related to “business-type activities.”

Like most people, cities typically have debt. However, like most people, cities should take on debt with a well-conceived plan—and the means—for repaying it. Woodstock’s problem is $42 million in debt compounded by a general fund deficit of over $600,000. It’s impossible to reduce debt when expenses continually equal or exceed revenue. Consequently, the citizens of Woodstock will most likely experience an increase in taxes, a reduction in services, or both.

Although they’re at opposite ends of the financial spectrum, Woodstock’s and Snellville’s current financial situations prove that spending policies do really matter.
