Intro

Happy New Year! It’s a new year with new opportunities and new challenges. Most importantly, it’s a chance to re-create your awesome professional team of supporters and advisors—-almost like your own personal Board of Directors!

I am talking about your “Dream Team”—those individuals who are professionals but also confidants and advisors that will propel your business into the next level of profitability and sustainability. This blog will tell you WHO should be on this “Dream Team” and WHAT you should look for in a “Dream Team” Member as well as HOW you go about filling the slots on this “Dream Team.” Let’s begin.

Who and Why?

Banker- This should be obvious but this Team Member has access to capital, i.e. money, that can help provide your business with cash flow or an emergency loan if one is needed.

Attorney- Again, this should be another obvious Team Member. Nothing can shut down your business faster or eat up more of your profits than a lawsuit or unknown regulation or rule. Make sure you have a business attorney that understands businesses and can respond to your business needs. Of course, Kendrick Law Practice is always at your service (www.kendricklaw.net).

Insurance Agent- This may be less obvious than the previous two (2) Team Members but remember that insurance (premises liability, umbrella, health, car, home, life, personal, etc.) is important to make sure in case something unexpectedly happens, your business and you are protected.

Accountant- This should be another one of those pretty obvious Team Members. Someone has to count, record and analyze the expected cash flow that you are highly expecting to receive right?

Business Consultant- This is someone who knows how to run a business and that can give you not only business theories but timely practical tips for short term tactics and long term strategies to grow your business.

Marketing & Branding Expert- No one can sell your business like you but it never hurts to have some extra help to focus your time, money and energies towards productive marketing efforts.

What? (should you look for in these Team Members)

Look for someone you are comfortable with- Clearly you need Team Members that you feel you can trust and talk to about sometimes difficult business issues;

Look for someone knowledgeable- Your “Dream Team” is only going to be as powerful as your weakest Team Member; hire professionals and sleep easy at night;

Look for someone who has access to your ideal client- It never hurts to have someone on your Dream Team that can send clients your way; it just makes sense; and

Look for someone that believes in you and your business- A professional that just sees you as another “client” or “referral base” without believing in your mission is a LIABILITY and not an ASSET.

How? (to Choose Dream Team Members)

There are different strategies, wants and needs to picking individuals for your “Dream Team” but I will tell you how I did it for Kendrick Law Practice. I asked myself the following questions:

What is the most valuable asset for me for Team Members? For me, it was access. Even if I obtained Donald Trump or Oprah Winfrey as Team Members, if I couldn’t access them (email them and get a response or pick up the phone and call them), they were useless to me. So I choose professionals I could contact at home or on their cell phone and I knew were responsive to communications I sent.

Who is in my vicinity? Part of having access is the ability to drop by for coffee or lunch to maintain constant communications with my Team Members so I asked who was located where my business was located or in areas I frequented.

Are they in my area of expertise? Not only did I choose a banker, I chose a small business banker. I didn’t go to a large accounting firm; I choose an accountant who works with small business owners. These are not only potential referral sources but there is a connection with common goals and passions we both share.

DISCUSSION QUESTION: Who else would you add to YOUR “Dream Team” and why?

Why Kendrick Law Practice?- We SAVE you money by:

Providing access to comprehensive legal AND business advice and consulting, creating value for
your company’s investment in us.
KLP’s Founder, Dar’shun Kendrick, holds a law degree and Master’s in Business
Administration.

Providing security through our three (3) point guarantee:

“72 hour guarantee”- You will receive your document drafted or reviewed within 72 business hours after payment (or it’s FREE!) and

“Dispute guarantee”- KLP will negotiate the terms of any document that we drafted or reviewed FOR FREE should a dispute arise (*Does NOT include litigation costs.).

Providing predictability through our FLAT FEE pricing on most of our services. You know EXACTLY what you are paying for a completed document.

Weight loss can be a perpetual, frustrating, roller coaster. One week you discover you lost 5 pounds and two week later, you discover you gained back the 5 pounds you lost only to gain another 2 pounds the week after that.

Or perhaps you had successfully lost 10-20 lbs or more only to find yourself gaining back the weight you lost and then some.

Then there are those who have successfully lost weight, transformed their body, and have kept it off. I happen to be one of those people.

I can tell you first hand that building a body that is fit and healthy takes commitment and doesn’t happen overnight. Many people are in a constant battle of the bulge and too often they will start and stop a program and not achieve results.

Fitness is NOT an event, it’s a lifestyle
If you are like most people, your best weight loss success happens when you are motivated to lose weight and look your best for an event, whether that event is a vacation, a high school reunion, a wedding, etc., and as soon as the “event’ is over you go back to your old habits that were not contributing to your weight loss goals. My question is, why go back to your old habits that were not contributing to your weight loss goals once the event is over? Why not continue to do what you were doing?

Being healthy and fit is a lifestyle, and I stress the word LIFESTYLE, where you are consistent with eating healthy meals and you are consistent with your exercise program. I don’t have to think about eating nutritious foods and exercise. Eating nutritious foods and exercising should be as natural as any other daily habit such as showering and brushing your teeth.

This mindset is what separates those who keep the weight off and those who struggle to keep it off.

Nutrition
Nutritional Sustainability
Everyone knows that the basic rule of thumb of weight loss is calories in vs. calories out. It’s not about the latest fad diet or a quick fix. If your nutrition plan isn’t sustainable, you’re not going to be able to stick to it.

Eating a balanced diet consisting of a variety of foods that are nutrient rich, flavorful, low in calories, that you enjoy is much more sustainable and enjoyable than the latest starvation diet or the latest fad diet that has you eating as much as you want of one particular item and very little of another item. Simply put, while you may get results in the short term, in the long term you can’t sustain it and end up gaining back the weight you lost and then some.

Be Aware Of What You Eat
95% of the time, I am very aware of what foods I eat. I don’t eat for the sake of eating. I don’t eat out of boredom. I eat to nourish and fuel my body and avoid foods that are loaded with calories that contain no nutritional value.

Unhealthy, unfit, overweight people tend to not give a second thought as to what they are eating and whether or not the foods they are eating are nutrient rich foods.

Precook your meals
Pre-cooking my meals for the week not only prevents me from grabbing foods that don’t contribute to my health and fitness, but saves me lots of time in the kitchen during week. I create nutritious, mouthwatering, healthy meals on the fly that take 20 minutes from prep, to pan, to plate.

So, how do I do that?

Every week I pre-cook and prep all my food for the week which includes slicing and dicing all my vegetables, I pre-cook chicken, beef, or fish on the grill and pre-cook a few sweet potatoes. I also buy foods that are easy to pack in a cooler and carry on the go with me such as Low Fat Greek Yogurt, Apples, Nuts, and protein shakes so that I don’t have to eat unhealthy, processed, convenience foods.

If you talk to any physique athlete, or individual who has successfully lost weight and have kept the weight off, you will discover that we all share this same habit.

For many years I consistently buy all my groceries for the week on Fridays and precook my food for the week every Sunday which takes me about an hour to one and a half hours max.

If you have a very busy schedule or a family, I promise this will not only save you time in the kitchen during the week, but will have you and your family eating more nutritious meals and will save you money.

Fitness
Give it your all!
Regardless of what type of fitness program you choose, the key to being healthy and fit is to exercise at least three days a week 30 -60 minutes and don’t just go through the motions when you workout. Make each and every workout count and give it all you got!

Find an exercise program you enjoy doing, challenges you, and you follow consistently. The best workout program will not provide you the results you are looking for if you do not follow it and you don’t give it your best effort.

Have a fitness game plan
Whenever I walk into the gym to do my workout, I always have my fitness game plan. If you walk into the gym with some vague idea of what you’re going to do, chances are you’ll end up wasting a lot of time and spinning your wheels.

You should walk into the gym knowing exactly what exercises you’re going to do, how many sets and how many reps of each exercise. Having a fitness game plan not only helps to keep you focused and motivated on your workout, but you’ll also be working out more efficiently and effectively.

Avoid Plateaus
I avoid training plateaus by changing up my workouts every three months. Doing the same workout day in, day out, month after month not only numbs the body, but numbs the mind as well.

I’m constantly challenging myself physically and mentally in the gym by trying out different training programs, styles and techniques and look forward to my workouts. (Be sure to check out my product reviews of some of the workout programs I’ve tried.)

I always feel a sense of accomplishment mentally and sets the tone for the rest of my day. When I challenge myself in the gym, I feel like I can accomplish anything I put my mind to and am more productive and always in a good, positive mood.

Exercise for the Mind/Body
Lack of sleep and stress can interfere with your weight loss goals and being consistent with your exercise program is a great natural stress reliever. Not only is being consistent with exercise a great natural stress reliever, it is also great for getting good, quality, restful sleep.

Conclusion
And there you have it. If you want to lose weight, and keep the weight off, it pretty much boils down living a healthy lifestyle that includes being consistent with your workout program and eating healthy, nutritious foods. I know this is something you haven’t already heard before, but for some reason, most of us tend to let their fitness and nutrition habits fall by the wayside. Don’t be one of them.

SELF-DEFENSE STRATEGIES OF POLITICAL SPEAKERS

Bill Lampton, Ph.D.

World wide, we constantly see and hear prominent politicians in action—in speeches, debates, press conferences, and interviews. Yes, we get tired of their repetitive appearances, dominating radio, television, and even the Internet. However, the communication strategies they use to get votes and gain support for their programs are worth analyzing. Let’s look at what politicians do to defend themselves when their viewpoints and statements incite their opponents and the media.

Tactic One: “My remarks were taken out of context.”
When Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said that he enjoyed firing people who did not give him good service, he fostered widespread criticism. Pundits said Romney could not identify with those who had suffered the pain of lost jobs, and that he had even whimsically referred to himself as “out of a job,” although most well informed people know he is wealthy enough not to need a job anyway. Romney and his aides asserted that “I like to fire people” was just part of his statement, since he went on to say: “I like being able to fire people who provide services to me. You know, if someone doesn’t give me a good service that I need, I want to say, ‘I’m going to go get someone else to provide that service to me.’”

Tactic Two: “Circumstances have changed since I first spoke about this issue.”
In 2010, Colin Powell– former Secretary of State and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff—said that he was willing to back repeal of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. He explained: “In the almost seventeen years since the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ legislation was passed, attitudes and circumstances have changed.”

Tactic Three: “I have matured in my thinking.”
During his inaugural speech as Governor of Alabama in 1962, George Wallace said defiantly, “I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny, and I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.” But eight years later—to the dismay of those who had elected him on that platform–Wallace said he had experienced a religious conversion, leading him to apologize to civil rights leaders for his staunch segregationist rhetoric. “I was wrong,” he said, adding that “those days are over and they ought to be over.” He put his words into action by appointing an unprecedented number of blacks to government positions.

Tactic Four: “That’s just what I would have expected my opponents to say.”
During the second presidential debate of 1980, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan were discussing the viability of Social Security and Medicare. After one of Carter’s position statements, the moderator turned to Reagan, who gave a response that would become famous: “There you go again.” Clearly, Reagan’s words were intended to disarm the opposition, because he implied accusingly, “that’s just like you and your supporters.”

Tactic Five: “I misspoke.”
In 2008 Hillary Clinton referred proudly to the courage she displayed by visiting hostile countries as First Lady. She claimed that in 1996 she had landed inBosnia under risky conditions. “I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base.”

Contradicting her account were archived news videos, which gained instant popularity on the Internet, showing her emerging from her plane calmly and peacefully. Confronted with the stark contrast to her words, her spokesperson Howard Wolfson admitted, “It is possible in the most recent instance in which she discussed this that she misspoke in regard to the exit from the plane.”

Tactic Six: “That leads me to say. . . .”
In media relations terminology, the politician uses a question as a bridge to another topic, with the transition provided so subtly that the diversion may go unnoticed by the untrained listener. To illustrate, suppose the question might be, “You seem to supportArizona’s toughest laws against immigration, so does this mean you want to bar anyone else fromMexico from coming toAmerica?” You respond, “I’m glad you mentionedMexico. That’s such a lovely country. My wife and I have vacationed there on several occasions, and we plan to do that again. The people there are so gracious and receptive. Now, next question please.”

Tactic Seven: “Oh, I wouldn’t do that at all.”
Here’s where spontaneous creativity comes into play. Perfect example: During the second presidential debate in 1984, aBaltimore Sun reporter asked Reagan whether, at his advanced age, he would be able to handle the strenuous physical demands of another term. He answered: “I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.”

It’s up to you to determine which of these defense strategies will work for you. Which ones fit your communication style and your standard of ethics? Even if you choose not to use any of these tactics, being familiar with them will help you identify them when you hear them from others.”

My best, Dr. Bill

On January 28, both local and national musicians will be sitting in for beloved singer and songwriter, Mac Leaphart, and performing his songs at The Hippodrome. Benefiting a man who has successfully made a career out of connecting with people through his music, proceeds will go to Mac in his ongoing recovery from a serious car accident and recent surgery to remove a brain tumor. A unique experience of camaraderie and good will, performances of Mac’s music will be set against a visual narration of the event on the theatre screen and give life to Mac’s story and his significant impact on those around him.

The concert features collaborative performances by Mark Bryan (Hootie and The Blowfish), Danielle Howle, Five Way Friday, John Wesley Satterfield, Joal Rush, Doug Jones (Craven Melon), Luke Cunningham, Greg Payne (The Piedmont Boys), Ryan Bonner, Jamie Resch with Shovels & Rope, Donnie Blackwell and more very special surprise guests. Reid Stone and Guilt Ridden Troubadour featuring members of Mac Leaphart’s current band, Mac Leaphart and My Ragged Company, will act as house band and musical conductors for the night’s celebration.

As doors open at 6:30 pm, acoustic music by Jim Marshall (Junkyard Angel) and a silent auction will start in the lobbies. Food concessions provided by Home Team BBQ and a full bar will run throughout the night. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in the theater and will last until 10 pm followed by more live music by Five Way Friday and John Totaro’s Classic Woodies until 12 a.m. or later. Garage parking is available as well as free parking in the open lot adjacent to the venue.

Mac Leaphart is a singer/songwriter who plays a blend of country, rhythm and blues. The Charleston City Paper describes Mac as “a rowdy set, which seems to meld Gram Parsons with the ‘Sticky Fingers’ era Rolling Stones”. Since his arrival in Charleston in 2007, Leaphart has been performing over 250 shows a year, solo and with his band, Mac Leaphart and My Ragged Company. Give Mac a listen and see why Skope Magazine says, “This guy may just single handedly save country music.”

After my article yesterday on Mark Huff, the now former Quiet Riot singer, fired as he sat in his hospital room having his head shaved for brain surgery; there was a mass pouring of emotions across the internet from fans and friends of Mark Huff. People asking for their money back for tickets they had purchased, and saying they only wanted to go to see Mark, among the many other outcries of anger over his wrong doing. Quiet Riot eventually released a half cocked statement, saying they sent Mark a certified letter and making insinuations that Mark may be lying about being in the hospital.

From QR Facebook page:

“With regards to Mark Huff: My policy has always been not to air out the dirty laundry in public. That policy remains the same even in light of those who chose to make accusations. The fact is that Mr. Huff’s medical condition had nothing to do with the decision that was made though it is unfortunate that it comes at such a time. His wife assured me that Mark would be home this week, and as legal protocol dictated, a certified letter was sent informing Mark of the decision that was made and why it was made. This was days ago. The content of that letter is a private matter unless Mr. Huff decides to make the reason for his dismissal made public which I believe would be counterproductive for him. I will not go tit for tat with this issue. If certain person wish to villainies me, that is their prerogative.”

This statement from the band sent out a rash of angry protests from friends and fans alike, I myself as the writer of the original article that soared the web, ended up in a conversation on MY Facebook page with a certain drummers girlfriend, whom insisted that a certified letter had been sent by them to Mark Huff, and that Mark was lying, which only lit my fuse because I KNOW for a fact that Mark is not lying. After said “girlfriend”, invaded my Facebook, myself and fans started noticing they were deleting any post on their page with the truth and only leaving up the fans words that choose to believe their garbage. My words, of course, were deleted. I mean, who wants the truth right? Banning Fans? Wow guys, that really is the lowest a band can go. Oh, no wait, that was yesterday, when you fired your singer while he was in the hospital for brain surgery, then lied to your fans about it.

Where am I going with this? You know, I myself work in the music industry. I am not some half cocked columnist that doesn’t know what she is doing in music, and I have become pretty tired of the rock star attitude. Guess what people, the fans don’t dig it, nor do the venues, promoters or any other normal thinking person on the planet. How do you know when you have gotten so far up your own arse, and think way too highly of yourself to have any form of judgment on being a normal human being? Ha! Ask QR and a few others, they seem to be great at it. I put this out to you and your “girlfriend” drummer-boy, as I said yesterday, I challenge you to show proof of this so called letter; a real one, no receipt, no faked one, the real letter, with the real signature, and dated. Until then, you might want to rethink how you treat your fans and friends. In the mean time, I will sit here supporting Mark Huff as he goes through this ordeal, alongside his family, whom I guess are lying to the world in your opinion and his friends that are all sitting in the hospital with him right now. Please keep him in your prayers my friends.

Fans have now created a page for Mark to show support for him on Facebook.

When I met Mark Huff of Quiet Riot, I was just a sound and stage crew person at a show they were playing here in Atlanta, and he didn’t know my music background or anything about me. He came in with the band to sound check, standing beside me as we worked on the drums. Very quiet yet friendly, and noticed the tattoo of my mic on my arm. We started talking about it, and he said he was getting the same mic in the same spot on his at some point. We left it at that and they headed back to the hotel till show time.

The guys came back later that evening to a very busy me, we had Art from Everclear on the other side and I was back and forth between stages. Everyone headed to the Quiet Riot stage after, and I climbed up onto the stage behind the sound board, very curious as to what the new singer had to offer, as well as Quiet Riot that I had not seen in a long time. What I got was vocals like I haven’t heard since having the same experience from stage with Ronnie James Dio. Just amazing vocals from a freaking great person. Mark would send a smile over as my mouth was on the floor, and after the show I was able to pull away and talk with him a bit, snap a picture, and tell him how amazing his voice was.

Mark and I ended up staying friends, he reached out, or I did one on

Kimberly James and Mark Huff - New Friends

Facebook, and he and I became friends. We would send out a pic or text from a show we were at; him excitedly sending shots from the stage as his dreams came true. We would text seeing how one another were, where we were, or just random silly things. Then about two weeks ago my friend sent a text that would send me in a rush to get love and energy out his way. “I am going into surgery soon, they are operating on my brain, please pray for me, I’m scared.” I don’t want to share any more of the personal texts we have had back and forth since, just know that it was a quiet knowledge between two friends of what was going on. Texts on prayers, and his future, and I am glad that he loves me enough as a friend to lean on me in this time.

Now to the big shebang. As Mark sits in the hospital this morning, having his head shaved, in fear and thinking of his future, he sees on the Quiet Riot Facebook an article saying they have parted ways with him. Parted ways? That was news to him. He never got one phone call, nothing. What kind of people, what kind of friends, what kind of band mates, have the nerve to do this to someone as they are about to go into something so major and scary?

From Mark this morning right after texting me from the hospital, from his FB page:

“As I sit in hospital…wait for my brain surgery….i have been let go from Quiet Riot. And nobodys had balls to tell it to my face.Interesting …the rock n roll business.I have to read the news in a post thats not even directed to me?…WTF?Let me tell all my friends……dont count me out….watch what happens.its obvious what I ever ment to this situation….i deserve better treatment….dont worry about me……worry about your own bad selves.and I am gonna take the high road……i have so much shit I could speak…..stay tuned my friends…..and if you arent…..delete me.”

I write this in wanting the fans, and the industry alike to know that this is not how it’s supposed to be done as industry, nor human beings, they could have waited. They could have stood by his side. It’s dirty, and mean. All is fair in love and war, karma has a way of equaling things out. mark has one of the most amazing voices I have heard in some time, and I know with all of the fans praying for him and standing by him, he will come out on top, and find something ten times better. Please send out your love and well wishes for my friend.

While in remission Suzy took over SOS to help others with cancer.
